How to choose skin care products

Consumers are truly spoilt for choice when it comes to skin care products. From products boasting the latest anti-aging formulae to all natural moisturising creams, picking the right product that best suits your skin type can be daunting.

Below is a quick 4-step guide that can help in your choice of skin care products.

1) Check for a clearly labelled ingredients list.

If you are putting something on your skin daily, you most definitely would want to know what you are putting on. Consider only products that contain a clear and detailed list of ingredients.

2) Run those ingredient names through EWG’s Skin Deep database.

EWG’s Skin Deep database provides comprehensive information on possible health concerns that a particular ingredient may pose.

Example, Propylparaben is used in personal care products such as shampoos as a form of preservative and fragrance. However, Propylparaben mimics estrogen and can act as potential hormone (endocrine) system disruptors.

3) Choose products with the NSF/ANSI 305 certification.

NSF/ANSI 305 is an American National Standard that defines labeling and marketing requirements for personal care products containing organic ingredients. In order to attain the NSF 305 certification, a product must contain at least 70 percent organic ingredients by weight.

4) Do a patch test.

Finally, if you are trying out a new skin product, it is always good to perform a patch test. This involves applying the product to a small area of your skin and watch for any allergic reactions over a period of 24 hours. If there is no allergic reaction e.g. redness or itchiness, the product will be safe for use on your skin.
